Chapter One: One Month Later

Welcome to The Quill & Quiver

One month ago, on Saturday 23rd May, we unlocked the doors to The Quill & Quiver for the very first time.

We had no idea what was about to happen.

We had worked so hard and we were so nervous to show you what we had created in the best part of a year.

We'd imagined over and over what opening day might look like.

What we didn't expect was needing to drag out spare furniture.

Have you noticed our chairs don't match?

Some are comfy chairs. Some are our plastic event chairs.

Originally, we planned for fourteen seats which almost felt ambitious.

After all, we were opening a bookshop where people could sit, stay awhile, enjoy a coffee and maybe indulge in a slice of cake.

Fourteen seemed plenty.

Then over forty people came through the doors on our very first day.

Suddenly we were pulling chairs out of storage, setting up extra tables and finding places for everyone to sit while they tucked into coffee, cake and conversation.

And still… we haven't managed to put those extra chairs away yet. Because you keep coming back.

Thank you!

Since opening, we've served countless cups of coffee using beans roasted by our friends at Jute in Thrapston, enjoyed more slices of cakes than we can count, and watched hundreds of books find their way into new homes.

We believed Corby needed a space like this.

You proved us right.

You've shown us that people were looking for somewhere to gather, connect, create and belong.

Supporting Local

From the very beginning, The Quill & Quiver was never meant to be just a bookshop. It was meant to be a place where local people, local businesses and local creatives could be celebrated.

Every decision we've made has been guided by that idea.

Whether you order a coffee or a slice of cake you are supporting local people and businesses.

When you browse our merchandise table, you're discovering the incredible talents of independent makers from across our region.

One of our most popular makers has been Alaina Creates from Peterborough. Since opening, Alaina has supplied us with hundreds of bookish keyrings, bookmarks, Kindle charms, stickers and pop sockets. Time and time again we've watched customers spot something on the display and instantly say:

"Oh, I love that!"

Closer to home, Corby's own Mama Established has filled the table with beautiful bookmarks, mugs, tote bags and caps that have quickly become customer favourites. Needy little things 😏

We've also been fortunate enough to get our hands on five special edition book boxes from The Quill & Quiver in Northampton. Four sold before we'd even had the chance to put them on display, snapped up during one of our Facebook Live videos.

When you choose local, you're supporting real people.

As a small independent business ourselves, we understand how much that support means.

That's why we'll continue to champion local makers, local suppliers, local authors and local creatives whenever we can.

Because community isn't something you build alone. It's something we create together.

The Pastime Parlour

Since day one we've had many questions with a recurring theme. “Can you run a “insert hobby” club?” It was evident so many of you wanted somewhere you could get together and craft with.

The truth is we just couldn't find the time to host each club separately. So we put our head together and came up with something that we feel is very special. Pastime Parlour.

What began as a simple idea for a regular community gathering quickly became one of our favourite parts of the week.

Our first Monday afternoon session saw the shop filled with laughter, conversation and creativity.

Around the tables we had knitters and crocheters working on their latest projects. We had people colouring and painting. We had digital artists sketching on tablets. We even had a chess board set up.

Our favourite part wasn't even the crafts that you brought, which were awesome by the way. It was people who had never met before inviting those that came alone to sit with them at the same table.

When we shared photographs online, the response was incredible. Many of you loved the idea but couldn't attend because of work commitments.

So we listened.

On Thursday 19th June we opened our doors after hours for the first evening Pastime Parlour. And once again, you filled the space with warmth, creativity and conversation.

The Pastime Parlour was created with one simple belief:

Hobbies are better when shared.

Hearth Space

On the evening of 11th June, after the coffee machines had been switched off and the doors had closed to the public, The Quill & Quiver transformed into something entirely different.

The lights softened. Candles flickered.

An altar of herbs and oracle cards took pride of place in the centre of the room.

For our very first Hearth Space gathering, we were joined by the wonderful Liz from Earth & Wonder, who guided us through an evening of reflection, connection and creativity.

Through poetry, oracle cards and shamanic drumming, Liz invited us to slow down and listen.

We created our own mantra cards, shared stories that shaped us, before settling down with tea, sticky ginger cake and hazelnut shorties to continue the conversation.

For a couple of hours the outside world felt very far away.

In a world that often asks us to move faster, Hearth Space gave us permission to pause.

We are incredibly grateful to Liz for holding such a beautiful space and to everyone who joined us.

We cannot wait to welcome you back for the next one.

Father's Day at The Quill & Quiver

This Father's Day, we wanted to offer something a little different.

Rather than focusing solely on gifts, we wanted to create an opportunity for people to celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, stepdads, mentors and father figures who have shaped their lives.

Across the weekend, a special Father's Day station took pride of place in the shop.

There were letters to write. Bookmarks to create. Puzzles to solve. Time to spend together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and shared part of their weekend with us.

Dungeons & Dragons

One of the things we love most about books is their ability to transport us to other worlds.

Tabletop roleplaying games do exactly the same thing.

On 21st June we launched the first of our Dungeons & Dragons sessions, led by our very own Alex.

For anyone unfamiliar with D&D, players create characters, embark on adventures, solve mysteries, battle monsters and tell stories together. It's storytelling, imagination and community rolled into one.

What makes Dungeons & Dragons such a perfect fit for The Quill & Quiver is that, at its heart, it's about people gathering around a table and sharing stories.

Alex has created an original campaign for our official weekly game, designed beginner-friendly introduction sessions for adults and children, and opened up opportunities for private groups to hire tables and run their own adventures.

Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or someone about to start their journey. There's a space for you at the table.

We can't wait to see where the adventures lead.

The Book Clubs

Before there was a bookshop there was a book club.

Almost three years ago, Carrie started a small Romantasy Book Club. She wanted to find more people like her who just loved books specifically in the genre where fantasy meets romance.

The first meeting there were three. Today, that community has grown to more than 400 members on Facebook, over 100 members in WhatsApp and regularly welcomes between 25 and 30 readers to monthly meet-ups.

In many ways, The Quill & Quiver exists because of that group.

So when it came time to host our first after-hours book club inside the shop, it was given who would go first.

On 28th May, just days after opening, the Romantasy Book Club became the first official book club through our doors.

The club that inspired the dream had finally found a permanent place to meet.

What many people don't realise is just how much the Romantasy community contributed to bringing the shop to life. They painted walls. They stacked shelves. They assembled furniture.

They tested cake (an extremely important responsibility.) One even tried her hand at journalism and wrote a fantastic feature about the shop for the Evening Telegraph.

The support we've received from this community has been extraordinary.

We will never stop being grateful.

June also brought another feature when Chuck interviewed Carrie for Corby Radio.

The book clubs don't just end with Romantasy.

Many of you have already purchased the books and signed onto our bookclubs this coming week.

Crime & Thriller.

Romance.

Horror.

Men's Fiction.

Non-Fiction.

And, of course, Romantasy.

Seeing so many people excited about reading, discussing books and finding their tribe has been one of the highlights of our first month.

If you've seen our Book Club Red Flags video online, you'll know we don't take ourselves too seriously.

We hope to offer you somewhere we can all come together and discuss books and just be.

The Small MomentS

When we started the Q&Q dream the big stuff was at the top of our lists. The renovations, the books, the suppliers, the furniture, the admin, website. The list is longer than most of our TBR’s.

What we didn't realise that all of those major plans could create such incredible smaller moments.

During our first week, we sat and taught you how to make origami dragons and cranes. We had a youngling show us how to make boats and fox faces in return.

We've loved hearing the excitement of how much this space means or will become to mean to you.

We love the conversations you have with us. The recommendations of which authors we should have on our shelves. The compliments about how well Carrie has curated our collection.

Independent Bookshop Week brought another wonderful surprise. With the help of Mrs Lamont, the Year 3 pupils at Studfall Junior School created a collection of handmade bookmarks for their local bookshop. Some featured positive affirmations. Some featured artwork. Some had us laughing and gasping with collective “awws.”

Many have already found homes with customers, but a few are still available by the till if you'd like to take home a little piece of creativity made with love.

We've loved seeing complete strangers sit down at the same table and leave as friends.

We've loved watching people return. The familiar faces. Customers whose orders we're beginning to remember. Those who pop in "just for a browse" and somehow leave with three books. People who we've lost count of the number of times they've already visited in these short 3 weeks.

Those little loyalty cards sitting by the till were made with you in mind.

Perhaps what we have loved most of all, is watching community happen.

That's the magic.

Looking Ahead

A month ago we opened the doors and hoped people would come.

To everyone who has bought a book, drank a coffee, attended an event, brought a friend, shared a post, recommended us to family or simply spent an afternoon with us:

Thank you.

The Quill & Quiver belongs to all of us now.

And if this first month has taught us anything, it's that Corby was ready for a space like this.

Thank you for filling this little bookshop with kindness, creativity, conversation and friendship.

Here's to Chapter Two.
